Strong academics and an enthusiastic coaching staff helped the basketball standout make her choice.

WEST CHESTER TWP. — Now Lakota West High School's Alexis Rogers can just worry about playing basketball.
Rogers ended the recruiting circus Tuesday, June 24, and verbally committed to continue her playing career at Duke University in 2009.
"Now I can concentrate on just basketball and on getting better," Rogers said. "I don't have coaches calling me and having that stressful situation of where I want to go."
The senior-to-be chose the Blue Devils over Georgia, Illinois, Vanderbilt and Xavier.
"Their coaching staff (made the difference)," Rogers said. "When you go down there, you really get to see how excited they are once they get you in person, and once I committed, they acted the same way."
The 6-foot-1 wing player averaged 12.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last season to help the Firebirds earn a state tournament berth.
She also had 64 assists and made 38.6 percent of her 3-point shots.
"It is a great compliment to all her hard work both in the classroom and on the basketball court," West coach Andy Fishman said.
"With Lex, it was always about what she wanted to do both academically and in basketball, and with just about any school in the country. Duke became her top choice with the combination of academics and basketball."
Rogers, a Middletown native, is the seventh member of the state runner-up Firebird team to earn an athletic scholarship.
Rogers plans on studying children's behavioral psychology at Duke.
