MONROE — The vacant Monroe High School varsity head football coaching position attracted 17 applicants from three states.

From that pool of 17, the school plans on bringing in five or six for interviews on Monday, May 12, and Tuesday, May 13, according to athletic director John Singleton.

"The timing is hurting us as far as the number of candidates. But we feel we have some young, experienced candidates and we had no problem finding the ones that we wanted to interview," Singleton said.

Initial interviews will be conducted by Singleton, incoming Athletic Director Dave Bauer, Monroe principal Robert Leahy, assistant principal Bob Millisor and Greg Gillen, the head of the Monroe youth football program.

From that group of finalists, Singleton plans to bring back the top two to three for a second round of interviews later in the week. Those interviews will include Monroe Local Schools superintendent Elizabeth Lolli and members of the school board. The school plans to offer the job by May 21 and present its choice to the school board at its May 27 meeting.

"We've researched the guys, and we want to hit the ground running," Singleton said. "We're late in the year and we want to make sure we take care of the kids."
