Firebird baseball now No. 1

For the first time in Lakota district history, a baseball team sits atop the state poll.

Lakota West — riding a 28-game winning streak heading into Wednesday night's game at Colerain — garnered 21 first-place votes and 227 total points en route to the No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press Division I poll.

"I'm really flattered that coaches around the state feel highly of our program to put us in that position," West coach Bill Dreisbach said. "It truly is an honor. However, we know our season is far from being over. I told our guys to try to avoid, if possible, reading about ourselves and not letting the hype get to us. It is an honor, but we've got a lot of work to do."

The Firebirds — the defending D-I state champs — are 18-0 overall and 14-0 in the Greater Miami Conference, having already clinched their second straight outright crown.

"That was our primary goal," Dreisbach said. "In my opinion, this is the toughest, deepest baseball conference in the state. It gives us a great sense of accomplishment. It's nice to check that off and turn towards our other goals."
