In any event, Lakota East High boys tennis coach Greg Mahlerwein always hopes for the best — a championship.

Unfortunately, this time around, the Thunderhawks couldn't deliver in the Coaches Classic Flight C competition.

East finished sixth with 115 points, as Elder (270) and Moeller (145) — two teams it beat in dual matches — grabbed the top two spots.

"We were hoping for a higher place than that," Mahlerwein said. "It was good, high quality competition we were playing against."

Senior Robert Pitman and sophomore Matt Witzman finished runner-up at first and third singles, respectively.

"They both are very strong players," Mahlerwein said. "Both of our doubles struggled; we were hoping for a little bit better. They played OK, but there were teams they were capable of beating."

Freshman Akash Umakantha was fourth at second singles.

The first doubles tandem of sophomores Prince Abunku and Vinny Vutai was seventh, as was the second doubles team of senior Chris Riddick and sophomore Scott Amlung.

"It shows us we still have some work to do before we get to the GMC tournament," said Mahlerwein, noting that the league event begins next Thursday, May 8.
