Lakota East High School's boys tennis team has gone through some growing pains this season.

But with the Coaches Classic beginning today, April 24, the Thunderhawks look to continue their progress with a solid showing in Flight C.

Joining East in Flight C are Elder, Moeller, Fairfield, Cincinnati Country Day, Kings, Summit Country Day and Sycamore 'B.'

Play begins at 3 p.m. with singles at CCD and doubles at Indian Hill. The competition wraps up at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 26.

"The classic is a wonderful tournament," said East coach Greg Mahlerwein, whose program was second in Flight D last year. "It's one of the largest in the country, and it's always good, level competition where everyone has a good chance to earn trophies and go home happy."

The Thunderhawks are 6-8 overall and 1-5 in the Greater Miami Conference after defeating Hamilton 5-0 Tuesday, April 22.

East blanked Western Brown 5-0 Friday, April 18, in the second round of the state team tournament. It will face either Walnut Hills or Vandalia Butler in the third round.

"I'm pleased," Mahlerwein said. "It's been a growing process. We're a very young team. Even when we lose, we're striking the ball much, much better, and the players are starting to develop the confidence they need to succeed."

• Lakota West (10-2, 4-2 GMC) has decided not to participate in this year's Coaches Classic. The Firebirds finished third in Flight B in the 2007 Classic.
