Mason resident Chris Stovall criticized city officials last week for what is said is lax lifeguarding in the wake of a drowning at the Mason Community Center pool.

Stovall said that when he and his 6-year-old daughter Lydia

swam at the pool May 4, lifeguards were anything but attentive, and one even asked his daughter to see if something in the water was feces.

With 4-year-old Bobby Simpson's drowning in April at the pool fresh on residents' minds, Stovall said he needed to speak up.

After talking with city officials, Stovall said witnessed a marked improvement at the pool last weekend.

"Everyone was attentive, and the head lifeguard was more visible than I have ever seen," he said. "If that maintains, then it was worth every effort."
