Driver ejected, debris scattered over six lanes of traffic

Just minutes after he allegedly stole a Dodge Neon, a 37-year-old man was ejected across three lanes of traffic in a two-car crash, police said.

Greg Roberts, 37, was taken by medical helicopter to University Hospital in Cincinnati after crashing the small black car on Breiel Boulevard, said Middletown police Detective Jerry Mossman.

"It appears right now that it is a stolen vehicle from Aaron Drive," Mossman said.

Just before the accident, he said a woman reported her car stolen.

Roberts was approaching a red light at the intersection of Breiel Boulevard and Rosedale Road and, according to witnesses, sped up in an apparent attempt to get through the intersection ahead of a Buick sports utility vehicle traveling eastbound on Rosedale Road through a green light, Mossman said.

Roberts hit the front of the SUV, which sent his vehicle careening 140 feet from the point of impact before he crashed into a light pole and was ejected through the windshield.

Roberts remained in critical condition Thursday night, a hospital nursing supervisor said.

The impact was so severe it sent debris from the car flying across six lanes of traffic and felled a street light. The engine laid next to the totaled car; its bumper and contents — including a laptop computer, microwave and toaster — were strewn across traffic.

The SUV sustained minimal damage in the crash, Mossman said. Its female driver was not injured and drove the vehicle from the scene.
