The lasting impression most people took from Kil-Kare Speedway on Friday, May 16, was Miamisburg driver Toby Alfrey's vicious meeting with the speedway's wall and ensuing flip high into the catch fence during the KOIL Legends feature.

For me, it was talking to Les and Joe Miller. The brothers sponsored the Rich Miller Memorial for the Sport Stock division in honor of their brother, who died from a brain tumor in December.

Miller's Touch Racing kicked around the idea of sponsoring a race at Kil-Kare. Unfortunately, it didn't happen before Rich passed away.

"We weren't looking to host a particular memorial race, we just wanted to put the money up and say thanks to a lot of these drivers," said Les Miller.

You could feel the respect Les and Joe Miller had for their brother, a Kil-Kare veteran, and also their desire to give back to the racing community.

And to add to the memorial, Lee's son Justin — Rich's nephew — battled up front before finishing third.

Alfrey, meanwhile is recovering at home with a concussion and some cuts and bruises. Anyone wanting to send Alfrey a get-well card or note can do so at 10334 S. Union Road, Miamisburg, 45342.

In a related note, Shady Bowl Speedway is honoring the memory of former track drivers with the Racing Legends of the Past memorial this Saturday. Fans can e-mail the names of the Shady Bowl drivers, class they competed in and the years they competed to eisaacs@woh.rr.com.

Names will be posted on the Web site and announced over the PA.
