Amy Elifrits, Latin teacher at Lakota East High School, received the Kraft Award for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching from the teaching awards committee for the Classical Association at a meeting held in Arizona in late April.
Elifrits attended graduate school at the University of Missouri — Columbia.
Students visit the research institute
Mount Notre Dame Advanced Placement and Honors Biology students recently visited the Genome Research Institute.
Students received a tour of the facility and witnessed relationships between engineering, technology, robotics, research, and medicine. Dr. Jaya Mishra, mother of Akanksha Mishra, 11, and lab manager at GRI, assisted with the trip arrangements.
The students were introduced to current research projects at GRI, which included looking for cures for ovarian cancer and researching the relationship between the brain and obesity.
Students were also taken into labs and observed ovarian cancer cells and robotic equipment used in research studies.
Biology teacher Sister Ruth Bedinghaus, SND de Namur and MND Science Department Chair Mrs. Susan Purdue accompanied the students on the trip.
