Locals take science projects to state

Several local students took their science fair projects to State Science Day, held May 10 at The Ohio State University. The day was sponsored by The Ohio Academy of Science, American Electric Power, The Ohio Environmental Education Fund and Boehringer Ingelheim Roxane, Inc.

John Barnes of Liberty Twp. submitted "How water pollution differs in area waters." He is a seventh-grade student at Mother Teresa Catholic Elementary School.

Seventh-grade students from St. Susanna School also submitted projects. They are James Breitenbach, "Do cars affect air quality?"; Allison Caruso, "Does heredity influence fingerprint patterns?"; Eva Juszczyk, "Are we wasting our money on bottled water or is tap water just as healthy?"; Brian Keller and Ryan Kime, "Electrolysis: Warm water vs. cold water,"; and Meghan Stier, "How clean are the cafeteria tables after they've been washed?"

Seventh-grade students from Hopewell Junior School also submitted projects. They are Ian Blomquist, "Power of light"; Mike Esekwen and Austin Gould, "Shapes and chutes"; and Ellen Fleetwood, "Sea monkeyin' around."

Parrella honored for piano playing

Middletown Symphony has announced winners of its music scholarships for 2008 for area students in grades seven through nine. Rotary Foundation of Middletown has graciously contributed to the high school awards and the junior high scholarships for this year. This generous donation enables area students to further their music instructions. Megan Parrella, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Parrella of Liberty Twp., won third place. She performed "Concerto in A Minor, 3rd Movement" by Williams. Megan is in the ninth grade at Lakota Freshman School, and studies piano with Leah Kay Hogg of Middletown.

Locals recognized

at Wilmington

Tristann Jones of Liberty Twp. and Rachel King of West Chester Twp. were recognized recently at Wilmington College's 27th annual Student Recognition Ceremony. Jones is a 2007 graduate of Lakota East High School, majoring in communication arts and theater. King is a 2006 graduate of Lakota West High School, majoring in education.

The Wilmington College Honors Program is designed to enrich the academic experience of qualified students with honors sections of the core courses, interdisciplinary seminars, a senior project and various noncredit enrichment activities. Entering freshmen who received an ACT score of 25 or higher, had at least a "B" average in high school and graduate in the top one-fifth of their class are invited to the program. Students must maintain a 3.3 GPA to remain in the program.

Ciancio receives award at Miami

Jennifer Ciancio of Liberty Twp. is one of 21 Miami University graduating seniors who received the President's Distinguished Service Award. Miami President David Hodge presented awards to students on April 13 at Kumler Chapel. The award recognizes exemplary contributions to campus and community life.

Soltys awarded

OSU scholarship

Rachel Soltys of West Chester Twp. has been awarded a CFAES Academic Merit Scholarhsip for studies in agriculture and natural resources at The Ohio State University. The award from the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences was based on her application, academic record, test scores and leadership achievements in school and the community. She is a senior at Ursuline Academy.

Holland graduates from MA program

Leanna Lawson Holland of West Chester graduated from the Medical Assisting Program at the Institute of Medical and Dental Technology on April 6.

Lake receives scholarship to CCAD

Amanda Lake, a senior at Lakota East High School, has received a Dean's Award scholarship to attend the Columbus College of Art and Design. The merit scholarship was awarded as a result of an art portfolio competition. Lake will begin her studies this fall and plans to major in advertising and graphic design. She is the daughter of Kelly and Troy Lake of Liberty Twp. and student of art instructor Linda Augutis.

Sutors score high at math competition

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart fifth and sixth grade enrichment students scored an "excellent" rating at a math competition sponsored by the Hamilton County Educational Service Center. Teams of three students worked in a group to solve problems using algebraic thinking and using mathematical explanation to express their results. Two members of the OLSH "Mathletes" team include Jennifer Sutor and Kristen Sutor of West Chester.

Locals graduate from Ohio U.

Several West Chester Twp. and Liberty Twp. students have graduated from Ohio University. They are Bridget Daugherty, bachelor of business administration, finance, magna cum laude; Lindsay Heger, bachelor of arts, English, cum laude; Allison Meyer, bachelor of arts, psychology; Matthew Newell, bachelor of arts, history; Brittany Nolan, bachelor of science in hearing, speech and language sciences, cum laude; Todd Weinkam, bachelor of science, wildlife biology; and Samantha Welty, bachelor of science in visual communication, photojournalism.

to NHS at MND

Mount Notre Dame High School recently initiated new members into the school's National Honor Society chapter. New members carry a 90 percent academic average and have exhibited evidence of leadership, character and service. Lakota students win journalism awards

The first Ohio Scholastic Media Association (OSMA) state convention was held at Kent State where the results of Ohio's Journalist of the Year competition were announced. Garnering first place was Sarah Massey of Lakota East High School. Also recognized were runners-up Sara Dorn of Lakota West High School and Graylyn Roose of Lakota East High School. Honorable mention went to DeDe Pan of Lakota East High School.

Massey's portfolio has been forwarded the national contest in Anaheim, Calif. The top three portfolio winners will receive scholarships.

Lakota Latin scholars honored

The annual induction ceremony for Lakota's Latin students who have merited entrance into the National Junior Classical League Latin Honor Society was held on May 6.

New members from Lakota West include Austin Becker, Shelby Begg, Andrew Bratton, Sara Callon, Jennifer Carpenter, Allissa Cepress, Samantha Conley, Krystin Dallis, Michael Davis, Maria Fedyszyn, John Fogle, Allison Furterer, Evan George, Garrett Gordon, Travis Hance, Alex Hartlage, Tara Keesling, Charles Lin, James Lin, Danielle List, Austin McCarthy, Katie McCurnin, Phu Nguyen, Danielle O'Callaghan, Amanda Onderko, Arpan Patel, Grishma Patel, Grant Poston, Julie Rogers, Matt Satcher, Daniel Shen, Amy Skurow and Taryn Willett.

Inductees from Lakota East are Leah Alseshire, Jennifer Bortnem, Alyssa Ferraro, Renee Fields, Erin Filbrandt, Tori Fryman, Katy Gallagher, Jon Hickman, Billy Lawton, Kevin Li, Lisa Liu, Kristen Pan, Tyler Phillips, Ally Riddle, Jared Riley, Kara Ruder, Dana Sand, John Terbot and Anna van Milligen.

A reception for the students and their families followed the induction. The students' Latin teachers include Sarah Elmore, Amy Elifrits, Linda Eger, Susan Ivers and Glynette Wilson.

Steen wins golf

scholarship

The Greater Cincinnati Women's Golf Association awarded a Foundation Scholarship to Marissa Steen of West Chester Twp.. Marissa, a student at Lakota West, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship based upon her grades, outstanding leadership, community involvement and commitment to golf. Marissa plans to attend the University of Memphis.

The award presentation will take place at the annual GCWGA Member/Junior Scramble tournament at O'Bannon Golf Club on July 28.
