West Chester gym ties positive self-talk to physical fitness

West Chester Twp.-based life coach and author Dan Woodring said he sees the combination of his work and that of sports and fitness coaches as a logical fit.
"You can take that and apply it to all aspects of your life," he said of the positive self-talk and goal setting he teaches. Mike Korn, brand exposure manager for the West Chester Twp. Fitworks, agreed.

"It's something, I think, has been going on for a while," he said.
Korn said Woodring is scheduled to present a free clinic on positive self-talk on Wednesday, May 14, at Fitworks. The event is free and open to both Fitworks members and nonmembers, and marks the start of a partnership between Fitworks and Performance Plus Technologies, Woodring's coaching firm, to provide life coaching and goal-setting services to gym-goers.
Woodring said life coaching usually focuses on the client's entire life, not just physical fitness. But like Korn, he acknowledged a strong connection between good health and positive self-image.
"It's almost automatic," he said. "(Being fit) pumps you up emotionally as well."
Korn said he sees effective help with goal setting and positive self talk as more valuable, in some cases, than even personal training in improving a person's overall fitness.
"It gives them the tools to be more consistent with working out and goal setting," he said. "We want to help give them the tools to help themselves."
