Xi recognized as Presidential Scholar

Lakota West High School senior Raymond Xi of West Chester Twp. was awarded the national recognition of Presidential Scholar. He joins three students in Ohio along with 139 others across the country for this year's designation.

Xi participates at Lakota West as the captain of the chess team, captain of the Junior Engineering Technology Society team, Mu Alpha Theta president and captain for the Academic Quiz team. He also serves as the co-captain of the Science Olympiad and group leader for peer counseling as well as playing on the school's ultimate frisbee team. He is in the Junior Classic League and participates in fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Xi also plays the piano.

This fall, Xi will attend Yale to study mathematics and

economics.

Locals named to

summer programs

Adam Snyder and Phil Billow are 17-year-old juniors at Lakota West High School who have been selected to attend the 2008 session of the Junior Statesmen Summer School at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

In fundraising efforts, the two are speaking to local service clubs and business leaders, and are seeking any other financial support.

Billow and Snyder also were selected for Buckeye Boys State sponsored by the American Legion. They will learn about city, county and state government through a nonpartisan objective education approach.

Anyone wishing to make an individual sponsorship to help Billow and Snyder defray costs may send a check to Admissions Director, the Junior Statesmen Summer School, 400 South El Camino Real, Suite 300, San Mateo, CA 94402. Checks are to be made payable to the Junior Statesmen Foundation and include a note that Adam Snyder or Phil Billow are the intended beneficiaries.

on display at Taft

Artists Reaching Classrooms provides students, teachers, professional regional artists and Taft Museum of Art docents to learn from one another in the classroom, studio and the Museum.

During the program, three artists visit each classroom; students visit an artist's studio; there is a docent led orientation tour at the Taft Museum of Art and tour of the Art Academy of Cincinnati; a writing workshop led by Kevin Muente; the ARC Student Exhibition and Reception at the Pendleton Art Center; and there is the opportunity to compete for docent sponsored scholarships and merit awards and exhibitions.

Lakota West submitted six student works for the ARC Exhibition. Those works included in the exhibition competed for scholarships and merit awards. Students received numerous honors and awards at this year's exhibition. Ellina Chetverikova and Nichole Smith received scholarships from the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Matt Marsan will have his ARC painting exhibited for one year with the KnowledgeWorks Foundation. Docent sponsored scholarships were given to Audrey Johnson, Jillian Cleary and Sarah Toney.

Toney's painting, "Boy in Stripes," won the Viewer's Choice Award and a gift certificate to Wilson's Art Store. During the exhibit's opening/reception and the Pendleton's Final Friday event, people voted for their favorite piece to receive the Viewer's Choice Award.

The exhibition will be open to the public through May 23 ar the Pendleton Art Center.

Piano students perform at museum

Two pianists from the studio of West Chester Twp. teacher Marilyn Galati performed in a formal recital April 27 in the Fath Auditorium. Three recitals were held that afternoon as part of the Showcase Series to highlight young, talented musicians in the Greater Cincinnati area.

Christen Wimer, 15, daughter of Tracy and Dale Wimer of Lebanon, chose to perform a piece by Catherine Rollin entitled "Summer's Dream." 

Also from Studio One, Ross Elliott, 15, son of Cathy and Tim Elliott, played "Bear Dance" by Bela Bartok. A ninth-grader at Lakota Freshman School, Ross lives in West Chester Twp. Following each program, the students were awarded a Certificate of Participation. The event was sponsored by the Southwest District of the Ohio Music Teachers Association.

In a separate event sponsored by Studio One, seven pianists performed in a recital April 26 at Mason Christian Village. Playing in the program were Katie Wimer and Nathan Phillips of Lebanon, both performing works by Bach. Ross Elliott, Jordan Stefut, Scarlett Minnie and Shivam Shah, all of West Chester Twp., chose works by Bartok, Beethoven and Debussy. Rebekah Fry of Morrow chose selections by Bach and Beethoven for her performance. Ross Elliott also performed "The Theme from Shindler's List" by John Willliams, while Shivam Shah performed "Blue Charlie Brown" by jazz artist Vince Guiraldi.

Massey named journalist of the year

The Ohio Journalism Education Association announced Sarah Massey as the 2008 Journalist of the Year. Sarah is the co-chief editor of SPARK, the Lakota East student newspaper. Sarah received money from the state association and will now be in the running for the national award and for first prize.

Students advance

to state competition

The Ohio Family Career and Community Leaders of America Regional Rally for Region Nine was held at D. Russel Lee. More than 100 students competed in 16 categories with students' projects and presentations judged by a panel of volunteers coming from education, business and industry.

Hopewell Junior students Anthony Sciutto and Mitchell Noufer placed in applied technology; Kaitlyn Strunk placed in career investigations; Victoria Shea placed in fashion design; Melissa Gomez and Katie Tuznik placed in illustrated talk; and Alexandra Green placed for interpersonal communications.

Lakota West students Whitney McKee and Bridget Shreiner placed in chapter showcase display; Michael Smith placed in fashion design; Cassandra Gover placed in illustrated talk; and Nikki Heath placed in national programs in action. Lakota East students Rachel Peal and Mary Tracy placed in interior design.

Plains student investors win big

Lakota Plains Junior School has succeeded again in winning the University of Cincinnati's Economic Centers Stock Market game. Erin Kirwin, Kelly Bakken and Katie Lau grossed $26,299 over the course of the 10-week stock market game. With $100,000 in hypothetical money to invest, the ladies decided upon First Solar and MasterCard as their major stocks. Minor stocks such as John Deere and Co. and TeRex also showed growth and helped to place them at the top of 558 other competing teams of parents, teachers and high school and junior school students from the Greater Cincinnati Area.

In addition to winning first place, Plains Junior School also had a third-place team in the overall competition. Members of that team were Kevin McManus, Colleen Richards, Andreas France and Ben Lanier. These students grossed $24,387 during the competition.
