Birthday dinner

Former Kings Millian Gertrude Smith, who now resides in Lebanon, celebrated her birthday with a dinner at the home of her daughter and family, also of Lebanon. Host and hostess were Garry and Marge Slaven and daughters Jill and Abby. Also in attendance were Bill and Stephanie Smith, and Scott and Kathryn Hagen and daughter Libby. The celebration was complete with a birthday cake with many candles. Gertrude would not say the actual number but said they were sticking out of everywhere. Must have been a small cake! The previous day her son Jim and his wife Cindy of Hillsboro stopped by with birthday greetings. Gertrude also received a plethora of calls from family and well wishers. Your correspondent adds hers, too, although belated!

With the Merrells

On April 25, Danielle Enge was guest of Mark and Marta Merrell for a grill out at their Kings Mills residence. On Sunday, Marta traveled to Columbus to pick up her niece Sarah Torsell. From there the two traveled on to Ypsilanti, Mich. to Marta's niece Becca Torsell's graduation from Eastern Michigan University with a master's degree in Historical Horticultural Preservation. Becca will be traveling on to Providence, R.I. putting her education to work.

Surgery

Evelyn McGuffey returned home on April 25 following surgery at Christ Hospital. She is the wife of the Rev. Earl McGuffey, pastor of the Sugar Run Valley Baptist Church. She also is the daughter-in-law of Linda McGuffey.

Little Nashville trip

Linda McGuffey reports that several members of her family returned home on April 29 from their annual trip to Little Nashville, Ind. Family members making the trip were Phil and Donna Wells, Larry and Joyce Brandenburg, and Dave and Kathy Stephens. There were about 34 in the group in total.

The Kings Mills Area Civic Club meeting scheduled for April 28 was cancelled.

Weatherwise

Compared to March, April seemed like a drought. The month only recorded 2.23 inches of rainfall, whereas, March had 10.20 inches of precipitation. Last year, April recorded 3.87 inches. The year to date totals show 2008 at 19.56 inches and 2007 at 15.50 inches. For a historical perspective, we have to go back to 1975 to find a wetter year to date in the amount of 19.70 inches. April had 12 days of recorded rainfall.

With the aftermath of March precipitation the river did not drop below the 5.0 foot level the entire month. The high reading was 8.30 feet on the 2nd and a low of 5.03 feet on the 28th. At this writing, the redbuds are starting to fade, which means summer will soon be upon us. Enjoy!
