West Chester Twp. trustees approved Tuesday the payment of the township's share of the county's 2008 paving and restriping programs. The 2008 program calls for just less than 4 miles of paving and less than 14 miles of slurry and crack sealing in the township. The cost for the paving projects is $462,676 for the paving and $493,107 for the slurry and crack sealing. The trustees also approved $30,387 to pay for the township's share of the road painting and striping in the county's 2008 plans.

"Lots of cracks need to be repaired," said trustee Lee Wong. "It was a harsh winter and residents are looking forward to it."

Trustees also approved the purchase of $30,000 in equipment and material that will allow township maintenance crews to conduct crack sealing and blacktop repairs as well.

During the Tuesday, March 25, brief board of trustees meeting, trustees also approved the promotion of a new fire lieutenant. West Chester Twp. firefighter Chris Munoz was promoted to lieutenant, filling a vacancy left when Capt. Steve Kelly was promoted earlier this year. Munoz will receive an annual salary of $64,003 in the new position, which he begins April 6.

Toward the end of the meeting, trustees heard the first reading of a resolution that will allow the township to apply for state reimbursement of nearly $1 million for renovation and preservation efforts at Voice of America Bethany Station.

Township administrator Judi Boyko said State Sen. Gary Cates (R-West Chester Twp.) secured reimbursement funding, and that the resolution will allow her staff to file the required requests.

Finally, the trustees scheduled an April 8 work session to hear updates on the West Chester Library.

"We're at the point where we'd like to give you an update, and share with you some further construction drawings," Boyko said.

The work session is scheduled for 6 p.m. April 8. It will be followed by the regular scheduled trustee meeting.
