Alan McCoy, AK Steel's vice president of government and public relations, confirmed Thursday morning he had received a call from Strickland's office about Saturday's meeting. McCoy said he was not aware of what the company's role in the meeting would be.
The meeting's announcement comes a week after a request by Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones for Strickland and U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown to intervene in the nearly yearlong labor lockout. Jones said he was elated at the quick response by Strickland.
"Here's a man of his word," said Jones, a staunch Republican. "This isn't about Democrat or Republican. It's about people working together to get things done."
