Superkreep releases new album

Halloween time usually provides a good excuse for Superkreep to hold its annual multi-band party, Night of the Kreeps, which happens Saturday night.

This time out, however, the band marks a milestone: the release of its first full-length CD, "The Anger or Angels."

"We've heard the final mix, and it's tremendous. We've got 12 songs on the disc, and we've tried to cram in there as much as we could," said guitarist Joe Beasley.

While the music on "The Anger of Angels" is mostly what one would expect from Superkreep, fans might be surprised by the sometimes elaborate production.

Vocalist Greg Banks certainly is.

"It's definitely metal, but it almost sounds like someone else made it, It's kind of like a classy sound," he said.

The album starts with that kind of curve ball: a 90-second instrumental track, complete with sound effects, called, appropriately enough, "Night of the Kreeps."

A track called "The Haunting" (one of several "scary" song titles on the album) is mostly heavy, but ends with a surprising piano coda reminiscent of "November Rain" by Guns n' Roses.

"Broken Past" opens with a simple but attention-grabbing guitar hook, while the song changes time signatures before circling back to that opening riff, with Banks sounding like he's singing from atop a mountain.

"Be a Man" opens quietly before exploding into a driving guitar line which leads to an interlocking bass and guitar solo and an unexpected dead stop in the music, before it picks back up where it left off.

And to top it all of, counting that into, that makes 13 tracks on the album, released just after a Friday the 13th. This is a group that loves its scary omens.

And the CD won't be heard just by fans of the band. Superkreep is preparing to ship off 200 copies to 200 labels in hopes of landing a recording deal, Banks said.

Also on the bill at Night of the Kreeps are Time Leaves Scars, Reckless Harmony, Edge of Life and Led to Ruin a band featuring Bank's wife, Rebecca.

"It's all pretty much heavy music," Banks said.

Superkreep will play the entirely of the new album, plus three as-yet unreleased originals. However the band expands their sound, fans should take to it, Beasley said.

"Our fan base has grown a lot," he said.
