FAIRFIELD —  Think you've got what it takes to be the next Fairfield Idol? Auditions begin at 6:30 p.m. today at the Community Arts Center Community Room.

They will also be conducted May 6th and 14th.

"Through the years we've been averaging about 50-60 individuals auditioning," said Ben Strickler, Parks Events Manager for Fairfield, "We're hoping this year by having the auditions later in the spring we'll attract some of the kids who might be home from college."

And while you might not receive a recording contract, the prizes for Fairfield Idol are extensive.

"We usually have a prize package that includes a Visa gift card with $500 on it, some studio time and a lot of other prizes we collect from area businesses, with gift certificates from restaurants and shops," Strickler said.

Fairfield Idol has quite a following as well, and it's not just the contestants' friends and family.

"Through the quarter finals and semifinals we may have 300-400 people who come out to support them. There are a lot of people who are there because it's a good event and they like to see the young talent of the people in the contest," Strickler said.

Last year's winner, 14-year-old Shelby McDaniel, said the contest improved her singing and performances.

"It definitely boosted my confidence and helped my stage presence," she said.

And audience members, along with three judges, decide who wins the contest.

This year, local radio host Cynthia Dye Wimmers, local musician Lee Heftel and retired Fairfield High School choral director Dan Prior will be judging.

Anyone 12 years old or older can audition, and McDaniel urges all participants to enjoy their time in the contest, however long that may be.

"Just have a lot of fun with it because it goes by really quickly," she said, "Practice really hard because there are a lot of good people there and a lot of competition."
