The world’s worst wine blogger

Um, that would be, um, me.

I mean, all blogs have certain minimum requirements that all of my cyberspace colleagues seem to be able to meet with no sweat: An up-to-the-minute “blog roll” of reciprocal links to other wine blogs … an easy system to categorize entries so readers can view previous posts in each category … an updated list of “favorite posts” … links to other web sites of interest … just basic Wine Blogging 101 stuff.

Well, I’m ashamed to say I’ve flunked Wine Blogging 101. I launched Uncorked two-and-a-half years ago (my how time do fly) with the single-minded (too single-minded) focus on content, content, content, providing daily or near daily posts on all things wine. Those other blog basics I basically banished to the back burner with the thought I would do them “next week.”

Oh, I did make a half-hearted attempt to build a blog roll and throw in a few favorite posts, then left them to go stale over the course of, I don’t know, a couple of years. To my horror, I went through the blog roll yesterday and found several of the blogs I “recommended” went dormant months, even years, earlier. My “favorite posts” had mold growing on them.

Worst, those items weren’t even appearing on the Uncorked “Index Page” that most of you find first, and which features the first parts of the previous half-dozen posts. The blog roll, favorite posts, and links to other web sites appeared only if readers clicked on one of the posts to read comments or the “jump” — the portion of the story viewable after clicking on “Continue reading.”

Well, my Cox colleagues who know a lot more about online stuff are working to diagnose and fix that problem, and I have gotten off my duff and started the process of updating the blog basics I mentioned. If you can suggest a good wine blog or wine-related web site I should link to, please do make that suggestion via a comment or an email to mfisher@daytondailynews.com.

I promise to do better — while continuing the commitment (or is it obsession?) with frequent posts and new content. Which leads me to the content you’ll find here on Uncorked virtually every Friday: The best darn list of wine tastings, dinners and special events assembled anywhere. Best part is, I can take no credit — ZEE-roe — for compiling it. That credit belongs to the Dayton-based wine listserv that painstakingly collects and records these listings for its members, and then allows Uncorked to copy and paste each week for this web site’s readers. For info on Cincinnati-area wine tastings and events, go to my friend Michelle’s My Wine Education blog. And for the Dayton-based listserv’s list, click on “continue reading” below.

Meanwhile, I’ll continue working to shed that “world’s worst” label. I aspire to be … the second worst.
