Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

A seasonal matter

Think about it: if you didn’t have access to a grocery store, what would your New Year’s dinner have looked like?

I planted vegetable seedlings this weekend, along with herbs I received as part of my CSA membership at Gravel Knolls Farm. The herbs (which smell fantastic, by the way) were the only produce the CSA distributed this weekend, since an unusually cold, wet spring pushed back the growth of much-anticipated veggies. Jim and Linda Rosselot said the CSA members have been understanding about that, as one suspects they should be: when I paid my dues, they made certain I understood the risk that is inherent in obtaining produce from a local grower in Ohio. On the upside, that makes the anticipation of real-tasting tomatoes that much sweeter.

But it also got me thinking about how my diet would change if I couldn’t go to Kroger at the drop of a hat. It’s kind of a spooky thought. What would you do if you could only eat locally? What would you do if you suddenly had to produce your own food?

Don’t fret; I’ll be less apocalyptic tomorrow.
